The Information Competency Program: Standards
The John C. Murphy Library Information Competency program develops students’ abilities to access, evaluate, and ethically use information. The Information Competency Program supports the college mission and goals.
Students must be able to demonstrate these skills in an integrated process:
- Define the question, problem or issue
- Determine the information necessary
- Locate and access relevant information
- Analyze and evaluate the information
- Communicate ideas using a variety of technologies
- Use information ethically
- Use, evaluate, and treat critically information from the mass media
- Use information skills for lifelong learning
Information Literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is an intellectual framework common to all disciplines, all learning environments, and all levels of education. Its focus is on content, communication, analysis, information searching, and evaluation. In addition, students need repeated opportunities for seeking, evaluating, and managing information gathered from both traditional sources and resources in the expanding digital world.
In order to enhance learning and facilitate in the acquisition of information literacy, the John C. Murphy Library provides the following instructional opportunities that actively involve students in this process, and may complement discipline faculty’s curricular efforts:
- Faculty requested, course-related library instruction sessions
- Individual Reference desk and electronic resource assistance
- One-on-one research consultations directly or through distance technologies
These opportunities not only prepare CLC students and for immediate curricular activities, but also enable them to be effective lifelong users of information. Additionally, the library provides services that enable faculty to become active partners in the integration of Information Competency instruction:
- Toolkit of tips and techniques for advancing IC principles
- Professional development workshops through the PDC
- Individual consultations to integrate information competencies in their discipline
