The Information Competency Program: Proposal for revisions to the general education learning outcomes

MEMO
COLLEGE OF LAKE COUNTY

DATE: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2005
TO: EDUCATIONAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL, FACULTY SENATE
CC:
FROM: AQIP GENERAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT TEAM
RE: REVISIONS TO GENERAL EDUCATION LEARNING OUTCOMES

The AQIP team working on assessment of general education recommends that two changes be made to the General Education Learning Outcomes at the College of Lake County.

The team recommends that the general education learning outcome related to use of Technology be revised as follows, and the change made in the next catalog:

Existing: “Use technology effectively and appropriately”

Proposed: “Use contemporary technology and information literacy skills appropriately and effectively to support academic and job-related tasks”.

The reason for the proposed revision is to more clearly define the outcome. We also believe it appropriate to include a reference to information literacy with the technology outcome since they are closely related.

The team has developed competencies (below) that would be used as part of a rubric to assess student learning in this area. These are draft competencies and would not be published. They would be used internally to help evaluate our students’ learning in this area, similar to how the writing rubric was used to evaluate artifacts of student writing.

Technical Literacy Competencies

  • Manage computer files and programs
  • Write a paper using basic word processor program
  • Manage and use an email account
  • Use the internet for research
  • Use other office computer applications as appropriate for work in his/her discipline (spreadsheet, presentation software, database, scheduling, etc.)
  • Use a graphing calculator
  • Use other technologies if required for his/her specific discipline (e.g. oscilloscope, rapid prototyping, mass spectrometer, scales, GPS units, etc.)
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for the usefulness as well as the limitations of the results.

Information Literacy Competencies

  • Identify information, including type and format, needed to support a thesis or solve a problem
  • Find information from a variety of sources, including internet, online databases, and print media
  • Evaluate validity and reliability of information gathered
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for the usefulness as well as the limitations of the results.

The team also recommends the addition of the following General Education Learning Outcome to the catalog:

“Read for comprehension using appropriate strategies”.

We voted to wait on developing competencies for the Reading outcome since we understand a new reading instructor was approved recently. We thought it best to wait for their input to develop the new competencies.
