What we do for you

  • For all College of Lake County students, faculty, and staff regardless of your location, study or research, we borrow library materials and obtain photocopies of articles from other libraries and have these items available for you to pick up at the CLC library location of your choice. This free service is available for any item not owned by the CLC Libraries, for items missing from our collections and for items on order.
  • For other libraries, we lend library materials and provide photocopies of articles from the College of Lake County library collections
  • The College of Lake County now uses the ILLiad system which allows you to request items from any computer. With ILLiad, you can place requests, track the status of your requests, view due dates and renew items - all online.

How we deliver items to you

  • Email notification : You will receive an email letting you know your item has arrived.
  • Hold for Pickup
All hardcopy formats can be held for you at one of our three pickup locations:
    • John C. Murphy Librarys circulation desk in Grayslake.
    • Southlake Campus library
    • Lakeshore campus library
  • Electronic Delivery
    • About 90% of articles borrowed from other libraries will be delivered electronically through your ILLiad account.

You can choose your preferred delivery location when you sign up for your ILLiad account.

Useful Tips

  • Dont wait until the last minute to use interlibrary loan. Requests can take 2 weeks or more to arrive, dependent upon how many libraries own the item and how far it has to travel to get here.
  • Many libraries do not loan audio/visual materials and they may have shorter due date.
  • You must provide a CLC email address. You will be notified when your item arrives with an email message.
  • Pick up your items promptly to take advantage of the full loan period.

Illiad

What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is the computer based interlibrary loan system that allows you to request items from another library.
Your ILLiad account lets you:

  • Place a request
  • Check on the status of your request (i.e. is the item on its way to CLC?)
  • Request renewals for your interlibrary loans
  • See your interlibrary loan request history
  • Resubmit cancelled requests
  • Update personal information on your ILLiad account

Please keep in mind the following:

  • This service is offered to all College of Lake County students faculty and staff
  • Most libraries will not loan new items (six months or less).
  • Many libraries do not loan audio/visual materials so they may be harder to get.
  • There is a limit of 10 items in process per card.
  • You will automatically receive an email when the item arrives.
  • Items will be held at your specified delivery location for seven days.
  • Due dates are determined by the lending library. Renewals are at the discretion of the lending library.
  • Allow at least 7-10 days for an ILL item to be received.

Frequently asked questions

  1. I forgot my password for ILLiad. What can I do to reset it?

Click on the Forgot Password ? link under First Time Users on the log in page. An email will be sent to your CLC email address allowing you to reset your password.
  2. Can I request books/articles from Interlibrary Loan during the summer months?

Of course! Interlibrary Loan operates year-round. Requests may be submitted through ILLiad at any time from any place. ILL office hours for consultation are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. If you find it impossible to visit our office during normal business hours, call ILL at (847) 543-2465.
  3. Is there a way to get my database search results transferred directly into ILLiad?

Yes, when searching databases, keep an eye out for the Illiad/Interlibrary Loan Link. Your results will be transferred directly into ILLiad after you log in
  4. Why cant I keep ILL books as long as I need them?

For items borrowed from another library, the duration of the loan and any restrictions on using the item is determined by the lending library. They also determine if a renewal for the item will be allowed. The CLC Interlibrary Loan Department honors all rules established by lenders. Borrowing materials from another institution is a privilege. You are expected to return books on time and to honor any restrictions on use that are stipulated by the lending library. In general these rules may include:
    • You may retain most borrowed items for at least 2 weeks. Check the sticker on your item.
    • Some materials may be restricted to use only within the CLC library.
    • Some materials may have restrictions against photocopying.

  5. Why does it take so long to receive items through ILL?

We process requests all day 8:00am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday and usually send requests to lenders minutes after the request is first submitted by patrons. We also check in the material 1 day (rarely 2 days) after it arrives excepting weekends when we are closed. Upwards of 85% of the time it takes to fill your request results from processing that occurs outside of CLC. This processing includes the time required for the request to be passed by the OCLC interlibrary loan system through a succession of possible lending libraries that we have identified. Once a library agrees to provide a loan or photocopy, then that library retrieves the item from its collection, produces a photocopy when necessary, and ships the item. Time in transit to CLC depends on the method chosen for shipping by the lending library. About 91% of the articles are sent to us electronically via the Internet. ILDS libraries ship most book loans by van service. Most other libraries ship books by U. S. Postal Service library rate, a much slower, though for them much less expensive, alternative. If you have an emergency need for a document or book, please ask the interlibrary loan staff for assistance.
  6. How do I view articles online?

You will receive an email when your article arrives. Log into your ILLiad account and click "View Online Documents."
  7. Why cant all articles be delivered electronically?

The individual lenders determine what form the material is in when it is sent to us. They may only have an item available in microfiche or may not have the capacity to send an article electronically. Sometimes, hard copies are much easier to read than electronic copies. Copyright laws may prevent electronic transmission of restricted articles. We send you what is given to us by the lender. They determine how to distribute their material and in what form. If microfilm or microfiche are not appropriate for your location please indicate that in the notes field of the ILLiad request form. We will do everything we can to obtain the item in a format that is usable to you in your location.
  8. Can my checked out Interlibrary Loan books be visible from My Library Account in Millenium?

Not for books borrowed from other libraries. Unfortunately, Millenium and ILLiad cannot work together correctly for books borrowed from other libraries to be visible. We do provide a link to ILLiad from the My Library Account screen.
  9. Can the checkout period be extended for ILL books borrowed from other libraries (renewals)?

Generally yes. Check the sticker on your item. If it does not indicate no renewals log into ILLiad and request the item be renewed. Please submit a renewal request at least two days before the item is due so we may contact the lending library for permission to renew. ILL will inform you via email of the new due date.
