Online Resources @ CLC

The John C. Murphy Memorial Library subscribes to several online resources in order to provide free access to current students and staff. Our online resource collection includes databases of articles (many of which offer full text version of the entire article to be read online), image repositories, reports, and electronic books. Many of these online databases are available from home. You will need a valid CLC ID number to access them (current Student, Faculty, or Staff members only). Need Help with Online Resources? Please visit the F.A.Q page if you have trouble accessing these resources remotely.

Research Guides

Research Guides are web-based guides that focus on student's research needs. For example, guides may highlight marketing or small business web links, demonstrate via YouTube!how to create a bibliography, or link to library databases lik JStor. Research Guides are available 24/7 via the library's website.

Librarians will develop Research Guides for courses when an instructor requests a instruction or work session for their class (see below). If you would like more information about how to have a personalized Libguide developed for your class, please call 847-543-2071.

Books in Other Libraries

If the library doesn't own something that you are looking for, we can request the item for you from another library. The lending library will deliver it to CLC so that we may pass it along to you. This program is called Interlibrary Loan.

Ordering Library Materials to Support Your Classes

You may work with the subject specialist to develop collections that support the courses you are teaching by recommending materials for purchase. To do so, you may contact them directly through their phone, email, or in person. In addition, any librarian at the Reference Desk can route these requests to the appropriate person. We also invite you to visit us to view the materials we have to support your courses. Contact the subject librarian to schedule a mutually convenient time for your visit, or use our library catalog to peruse your subject online from your office or home. Use the list below to determine the subject specialist for your course.

Request an instruction or work session for your class

Library instruction gives your students the research skills they need to succeed in your class. This instruction can vary to include:
  • A full session (45 minutes) covering a variety of research sources and strategies in our classroom or yours targeted specifically to your content and assignments for the best results.
  • A "Bib lite" - a brief session in your classroom on a particular database or research tool.
  • Bring your class into the library to allow your students class time to research with the help of our library staff.
  • Embeded librarians (see details below)
Use the "Online Request Form" button below to submit a request for an library instruction session for your course. Please submit your request and a copy of your assignment at least two weeks in advance to ensure the availability of a librarian and preparation of materials. Once submitted, a librarian will contact you to confirm the time and content of your session. All requests are tentative until confirmed by a librarian. If you have further questions, or do not receive a confirmation within 7 days, please call 847-543-2462 (extension 2462 from a campus phone).

Embedded Librarians

Want to improve your students’ research and database skills? Embed a librarian into your online course. Here are some ways the librarians can help:
  • Librarians can monitor a discussion board for 1-2 weeks evaluating resources for papers.
  • Librarians can create a customized class related research guide for your course (see Research Guides information above).
  • Librarians can provide input on research assignments like creating rubrics for evaluating resources.
CLC Librarians can be embedded into your Blackboard course in three easy steps:
  1. Contact Michelle Carter, x2891 to be paired with a librarian subject specialist.
  2. Meet with the selected librarian to outline the assignment or teaching objective.
  3. Working together, classroom and library faculty can create rubrics for resource evaluation.

Reserves

When materials (books and audiovisuals) will be used by a large number of students during a semester, it is recommended that they be placed on reserve at the Circulation Desk. If you are using an AV material students can view the movie in the basement of the library at viewing stations (VHS or DVD). The instructor chooses the loan period of one week, two days, or two or four hour library use only. To reserve items please fill out the following form and return it to the Circulation Desk. If you have questions, call 847-543-2619.

Professional Development

Add library help chat box to your Blackboard Course pages

Allow your students to stay connected with the library right from your Blackboard course or website. Installing a Meebo Widget on your course page(s) creates a direct link to the librarians through a standard chat interface. Want to see it in action? Just copy the HTML code in the gray box below and paste it wherever you like on your Blackboard course. TIP: Paste it in using the "Create Item" button in Blackboard, and selecting the html option.

Watch this video to see how it is done.

Copy and paste the code below into your Blackboard Course

chat with a librarian
email a librarian

The image on the left is an example of what the widget will look like after you have correctly pasted the code into your course or website. Go ahead and test it out. If a librarian is not available to chat at the moment, you can leave a message. Don't forget to leave your name and email address if you'd like us to get back to you.

If you need additional assistance, please contact the library technology specialist at 847-543-2734.
