Locating Materials in the Library

Use the Library Catalog at Lakeshore Campus, Grayslake Campus, or from home. To get to the library catalog go to the library website at http://yyz.clcillinois.edu/library/ and choose the first link under Library Catalogs, “CLC Library”. Then choose the type of search from the list.

You can search the library catalog in several ways. Here are the main ways you will use.

To find items by an author, click on AUTHOR. (Author = writer of the book) Type in the author’s name: for example, Gilbert, Judy, to find items by that author.

To find a particular title, click on TITLE. (Title= name of the book or tape) Type in the title: for example, Crossroads Cafe, to find that title.

Usually, you will want items on a particular topic. For that, click on SUBJECT. Here are helpful topics, or subjects, for ESL students.

To find a list of books that are easier to read, sometimes called readers, use these topics:

Readers for new literates
High interest low vocabulary books

Most other books for ESL students are under the subject of English language with another subject after it. Here is a list of other topics to try. Type them in exactly as you see them here.

English language study and teaching foreign speakers
English language textbooks for foreign speakers
English language spoken English
English language pronunciation by foreign speakers
English language composition and exercises
English language phonetics
English language sound recordings

To limit any subject search to sound recordings:

  1. Perform the subject search as above.
  2. Click on the box "LIMIT THIS SEARCH."
  3. Click on the down arrow FORMAT.
  4. Choose AUDIOCASSETTE.
  5. Click on LIMIT/SORT ITEMS RETRIEVED USING ABOVE DATA.

If you see a book you would like, and the status is CHECK SHELF, print a copy of the record. If you are at Lakeshore, take it to the LRC in N203 where the LRC Coordinator will give you a form to fill out. The book will be sent from the Main Campus to the Lakeshore Campus within one working day. If you do not already have a library card, an application will be sent with the book. You must sign the application before you can take the book home.
